A barrel of truly rare character, AMB-R-164 was distilled by MGP in Indiana from their well-loved 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill and aged for six years and eleven months before being finished in Amburana wood and bottled without chill filtration at a cask strength of 117.8 proof. The nose opens with scents of ginger coffee cake, incense, burnt cinnamon stick, cedar, and herbal tea. The palate brings a unique sweet, herbal, and spiced flavor reminiscent of a cinnamon chai latte sweetened with agave syrup, then poured into a freshly heavily charred barrel. There is also an interesting balance of sweet tart fruit, like a strawberry-rhubarb crumble, and a more brooding industrial note, not unlike Trinidad's cult favorite Caroni rum. On the finish, cinnamon is complimented by molasses, dill, sandalwood, and a pop of black pepper. Unique and tasty, we've never had an American whiskey quite like this. It's a fantastic contender for cold weather sipping, and could be a genuinely great cigar pairing.
