A modern, conscientious craft distillery, Kentucky Peerless Distilling traces its heritage way back to the Worsham Distilling Company, DSP-KY-50, in the 1880s, which became Kentucky Peerless under the leadership of Henry Kraver in 1889. In 2014, Kraver’s great-grandson and great-great-grandson, Corky and Carson Taylor, revived the brand and restored the 115 year old Peerless Distillery in Louisville. Today, Peerless mills, mashes, ferments, distills, ages, and bottles their whiskies themselves. They use a sweet mash fermentation process which helps make each batch of whiskey unique, and they bottle everything at barrel proof without dilution or chill filtration.
Selected onsite in Louisville, barrel B170427103 is deliciously different from most of the mainstream bourbons produced by the big legacy brands. Distilled in 2017 and bottled in 2023 at a barrel proof of 115, this whiskey packs a ton of flavor. The nose opens with aromas of caramel, custard, bananas, oak, and pepper. On the palate, refreshing and surprising tropical fruits open the sip before allspice, chili pepper, and ginger spice things up. The finish brings pineapple juice, sweet oak, and milk chocolate. Sweet, fruity, and spicy, this Peerless barrel beautifully demonstrates how careful production and attention to detail can create beautiful, unique bourbon.
