Announced as a limited time offering before the 2021 US Open, Dewar’s partnered with the USGA in crafting this 19 year old blend, inspired by the 19th hole, aka the clubhouse where golfers grab a post-round drink. Fittingly for a Scotch whisky made in honor of a US event, the whisky was finished entirely in American bourbon casks. With a 92 point score from Whisky Advocate, and mutual praise from other reviewers - including an A rating from SF's local good drinking guide - Drinkhacker, the Dewar's folks were a bit precious in doling out bottles. With the 122nd US Open on the horizon, things have loosened up a bit, and this 19 Year Scotch is now going for a pretty incredible $64.5 a bottle. It's a great chance to cross off your Father's day shopping early, and perhaps grab one for yourself to enjoy in the meantime.
From Whisky Advocate: "It tees off with manuka honey, toasted English muffin, vanilla seed, toasted coconut, and baking spice aromas. It goes down the hole smoothly, with creamy flavors around a core of vanilla intensity plus cream soda, dried banana, and green fruits, gliding through honey, butterscotch sauce, and caramel."
From Drinkhacker: "Turns out this is an iconic and delightful expression of bourbon barrel-aged blended Scotch, its 19 years clearly evident on its well-developed shoulders. The nose is rich and malty, with more caramel than expected, giving it a depth and silky sweetness that is often lacking in blended whiskies. The palate is bold with salted caramel — there’s plenty of saline in this one — that leads to a well-developed layer cake of chocolate, vanilla, and nougat, baking spice, and some cinnamon-layered applesauce notes. This expression feels built for the creme brulee fan and the chocolate ganache lover."
