The Not Oaxaca Mezcal Exploration Set
Oaxaca produced 85 percent of all mezcal in 2017, while the lesser-known state of Durango produced less than 2 percent. This mezcal flight is for those looking to expand their mezcal journey beyond the state of Oaxaca. Each mezcal producing region has its own ecosystem with a unique set of endemic agave varieties.
Flight includes: Ultramundo Maguey Lamparillo Mezcal (750 ml), Don Mateo Alto Mezcal (750 ml)
Ultramundo is produced exclusively with wild Lamparillo (A. Asperrima) from 24,000-acre Pelayo Ranch in Mapimí, Durango. Bright and fresh flavors of grapefruit zest and lemongrass make this an especially refreshing mezcal. Sustained minerality is present across the palate and finish. Drinks fantastic as a "Ranch Water" highball.
Don Mateo Alto is a pure product of Michoacan by maestro mezcalero Jose Emilio Vieyra Rangel. Keeping with his family’s tradition, this mezcal is made with spring water and uses only estate-grown agave Inaequidens. Slight variations in the stills and cooking methods make this a unique mezcal that is quite different from anything made in Oaxaca. The nose of this mezcal is ripe with agave, pine, and citrus with an herbaceous underbelly. The mouthfeel is big and coats the entire mouth. For taste, it has strong citrus fruit and deep earthy notes that mingle through a long smokey finish. Bottled at 46% abv.
