Glenturret Triple Wood Single Malt Scotch
A hidden gem for malt lovers since its initial release in 2020, Glenturret Triple Wood has earned more (well deserved) attention since the 2023 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. There, it earned an Outstanding Gold score of 99/100, the highest score of all Scotch entries. Aged in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry barrels made from both American and European oak, Glenturret Triple Wood is bottled without added color at 86 proof. This is a delicate whisky that showcases the sweet and distinctively fruity style of Glenturret's distillate, bolstered by the unctuous character of sherry. Look for notes of candied orange peel, vanilla, ginger cake, cinnamon, and barley sugar, with just a kiss of oaky tannin lending depth.
Glenturret Distillery traces its legitimate history to 1763, but can trace the operation of an illicit distillery on the same grounds as far back as 1717, when its position in a valley walled in on either side by two lookout hills served it well to avoid the authorities. In recent years it has largely flown under the radar, and was primarily used as a key ingredient in The Famous Grouse Blended Scotch. In 2018 the distillery changed hands and the Single Malts were given a bit more love and attention, which led to a revamp of all of them, varying the expressions and upping the proof across the board.
N.B. - Glenturret is also famous as the home to Guinness world record mouser cat, Towser, legendary for her nearly 30,000 confirmed victims over her 24 years.
