Dark Arts Double Oaked Rye Whiskey
This extremely limited release from Dark Arts Whiskey House is the result of a mishap that occurred in Indiana almost nine years ago. In December of 2015, MGP tested a possible new cooperage partner by filling 12 of their barrels with their famous and fabulous rye whiskey (distilled from a mash of 95% rye and 5% malted barley). The barrel makers failed the test, as by 2019 more than half of the whiskey had leaked out. MGP was able to salvage the remaining whiskey and, after vatting, rebarreled the whiskey into five heavy char barrels from Zac Cooperage. This unintentional double barreling accidently produced a truly unique and fabulous whiskey. The nose opens with scents of fresh rye bread, peppercorn, and sweet almond with accents of orange oil, pine, anise, and dill. The palate begins with fruity orange and sweet honey with dusty rye spice arriving on the midpalate along with pine, vanilla, and peppery spice. The peppercorn spice remains through the finish, joined by sweet mint, dill, and oak.
