The Brandy Sazerac Kit
Of all the great New Orleans cocktails, the Sazerac is "Le Grand Roi". Though it is made more often with Rye whiskey these days, the original version of the drink, like many New Orleans drinks, was almost certainly made with French brandy. Essentially a French-y take on an old fashioned, with the added supporting character of anise, the star of the show is very much the base spirit. With that in mind, we couldn't think of a better fit than Sazerac de Forge, and not just because of the name! The Cognac is made in the 19th century style, unfiltered, at a higher proof (47% abv), and made with a blend of grapes instead of the usual choice of the relatively neutral Ugni Blanc grape. These come together to lend more character overall, with more complexity, bite, and spice than most modern Cognac styles, which makes it a fantastic spirit to sip on, but also means that it really shines in a cocktail, despite a price tag that generally leaves it out of the "mixing" category. But if you can't indulge on Fat Tuesday, then when can you?
