Wright and Brown: The gold standard of local, crafty, small batch, whiskey
"Craft whiskey" has finally evolved beyond the semi-meaningless small batch, artisanal, hand-crafted tropes that it created for itself and Oakland's own Wright & Brown's Rye and Bourbon Whiskey is case and point. This is objectively good whiskey - local, small batch (fewer than 800 bottles), artisanal, hand-crafted be damned.
Our team of sippers and mixers with taste buds as diverse as it gets - agree that Wright and Brown's Rye (malted rye and barley with notes of pancake batter) is so much more than the sum of its parts.
Wright & Brown Distilling Company of Oakland, CA, is a grain to glass distillery who mills, mashes, ferments, distills, ages, and bottles on site.
Their rye whiskey is copper pot distilled from the finest quality hand-selected malted rye and barley, aged in new American White Oak casks with a medium char, and bottled non-chill filtered with no coloring added at 45% ABV. No outside enzymes are added to complete fermentation, instead an extra large proportion of barley naturally completes the process following traditional methods, (all that barley also lends a phenomenally chewy body to the whiskey.)
A single malt, brandy, and rum are in the works, and we excited to continue to drink their distinct line of tasty and unique spirits.
Join us for a tasting Thursday, September 14th, 4:30-6:30 and pick up a bottle from future super stars in the distilling world, craft or otherwise. You'll be able to say you knew them back when he was a recent tugboat operator.
